Communication Styles

Since the foundation of personal and professional success lies in understanding yourself and others we use the DiSC Personal Profile System® assessment tool.  The DiSC Personal Profile System® enables each person to identify their own behavioral style, maximize their communication skills, capitalize on their own strengths, increase their appreciation of other people's behavior and minimize conflict through appreciation and understanding.  For more information, please see Professional Assessments.

After completing the online DiSC Personal Profile System® from Inscape Publishing, which takes about 10 minutes, you receive an in-depth report which will help you reduce barriers, anticipate and minimize potential conflict with others and increase your appreciation of different communication styles.

Improving Your Listening Skills

Good communication is one of the most valued skills in the workplace and effective listening is basic to communicating productively inside the organization and meeting the competitive challenges outside. We use the Inscape Personal Listening Profile to help you become an active, purposeful listener in a wide variety of situations to produce a more productive communication.

It’s estimated that people screen out or change the intended purpose of what they hear in over 70% of all communications. The biggest factor contributing to such communication is our listening approach. Behavioral research shows that people listen with a preferred listening approach. The Personal Listening Profile research describes five listening approaches:

  • Appreciative: listens in a relaxed manner, seeking enjoyment, entertainment or inspiration
  • Empathic: listens without judging, is supportive of the speaker and learns from the experiences of others
  • Comprehensive: listens to organize and make sense of information by understanding relationships among ideas
  • Discerning: listens to get complete information, understand main message and determine important details
  • Evaluative: listens in order to make a decision based on information provided and may accept or reject message based on personal beliefs

The Personal Listening Profile® helps you:

  • Discover your natural approach to listening
  • Capitalize on your listening strengths
  • Learn how listening approaches impact listening effectiveness
  • Improve your ability to understand the purpose of different communications
  • Use listening approaches appropriate to your communication style
  • Overcome listening barriers and reduce conflict in the workplace
  • Enhance individual and team performance

Networking - The Secrets to Making Positive Connections

Who hasn’t had this experience, at least once in their life?  You enter the room, and as you look around, you do not see a single familiar face.  Everyone seems to be engaged in conversation and you ask yourself, “How am I supposed to break into one of these groups?”  Creating a positive social network is far too important for your business success to ignore.  This training teaches students the steps that will make networking more enjoyable and it will change their attitude.  The good news is that it is a skill that can be learned.  Remember, networking is about getting to know new people and building relationships.

Topics included in this module: Listening Skills, Handshaking, Introductions, Small Talk, Business Card Usage, Name Tag Etiquette, Working the Room, Using Your Body Language, Building Rapport.

Since having good listening skills is a critical part of building rapport I suggest having each participant take the Personal Listening Profile assessment tool by Inscape Publishing.  Successful organizations know that good communication is not just about speaking well.  It’s about the quality of the connection between the senders and the receivers of the message.  The strongest influence on the quality and outcome of all communication is the ability to listen effectively.  Only by listening effectively can you respond appropriately.
